The lowland streaked tenrec is the only sociable tenrec species and like to gather in groups of up to 20. They will dig tunnels and burrows that are connected to each other which form a complex system. Living in groups helps protect them from predators, as well as the sharp quills on their bodies. The lowland streaked tenrec is just one example of how convergent evolution, in an environment that has been geographically isolated for 88 million years, can allow different species to fill a variety of unusual ecological niches. The lowland streaked tenrec ( Hemicentetes semispinosus) belongs to the family Tenrecidae in the order Afrosoricida, and more specifically to the subfamily of the spiny tenrecs Tenrecinae. The average body size for H. semispinosus is a length of 140 mm (5.5 in) however adults have been recorded to grow up to a maximum of 172 mm (6.8 in). Streaked tenrecs are important as predators of worms in their native Malagasy habitats.
